2020 has been a revealing and challenging year. COVID-19 and the reaction of governments, main-stream media, the pharmaceutical industry, and the majority populations have revealed how conditioned humans are. Its been a disaster and our reaction has been massively incompetent.
I totally disagree with the those who say that COVID-19 is a conspiracy to control people. First of all, the execute such a conspiracy is to believe that governments and the shadow government have planned things that far in advance. I think that the vast majority of the elites are not that smart or competent to execute such a thing. Secondly, control of people is already a foregone conclusion. Society is tightly regulated and this is accepted to most people (including myself). The freedoms I believe I have are not fundamentally threatened as of yet.
Sacrificing freedoms to not see people over Christmas and New Years was repulsive but I understand that governments would use such a ham-fisted tactic and that 90% of people would comply. I have little confidence in governments the world over that they know what they’re doing. They are beholden to the medical and scientific elites that know their fields super well, but have no clue on what makes a society worth living in.
I think our governments have over-reacted. I think the virus wrecks huge damage on some populations and leaves others with minor or little effect. The overall percentage of death and sickness does not warrant the shuttering of entire industries and livelihoods. The economic and social consequences of these shut downs will be felt for years, if not the entire decade. Governments the world over have done its citizens a huge disservice. The treatment has become worse than the actual illness.
My only hope is that I’m wrong and that the economy will bounce back and the economic and social damage is not as terrible as I fear.
Business wise, I’ve had a productive year. I am in a fortunate position to be able to work from home with both my professional career and with my sideline.
I’ve developed some interesting concepts about play and game philosophy (link) and had some fun working on new meta-media concepts like Crossovers.
I’ve finally accepted the conclusion that I’ll not be able to develop any kind of video game properties until I retire (which will hopefully be in four years, 2025) as I don’t have the time to commit to learning programming. Instead, I’ll continue to do research and concept writing on game designs.
I’ve cemented my love for Idle Games. In particular, I’ve come to fall in love with two games by developer Grumpy Rhino Games – Idle Apocalypse and Idle Empires combines the game-building Idle play with cute, smart narrative design. These are brilliant games and will serve as an inspiration for me to work towards.
So welcome to 2021. While I don’t think the vaccine will make that big of a difference, it will create confidence which has been shaken. I wish all of you a happier and healthy New Year.
