Welcome to my blogged thoughts about the Winnipeg Jets. I love hockey and I love sports statistics. I am combining the two in my blog that looks at insightful new ways of seeing how the Executive Management of the Jets (Mark Chipman & Co.) are doing with advancing to the Stanley Cup.

I firmly believe that a sports franchise is only as good as its Ownership and Management. When Mark Chipman & David Thompson purchased the Atlanta Thrashers, they inherited some building blocks but the franchise was disorganized and listless. Evaluating the team on the ice leads to asking questions about how does ownership and management affect change in a team’s performance.

This blog will look at different aspects of the Winnipeg Jets from its drafting record, its player performances, and how the team compares to when it operated as the Atlanta Thrashers.

Winnipeg Jets Cumulative Trades Score 2011-2016

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Jets Trades
Player Trading is a useful way for NHL Teams to supplement and refresh their roster. It becomes possible to get rid of players that need a change and giving a fresh start to the players you get or build for the future. The Winnipeg Jets are known to be a team that makes very few trades. Since they arrived in Winnipeg, GM Cheveldayoff has made only 19 trades over five years. But how has the Winnipeg Jets fared with these trades? Are they winning or losing? This article attempts to answer that question. I have created a table that tracks each trade conducted by the Jets that compares traded players according to a very simple, transparent statistic called ProGames (ProGms). ProGames counts the number of NHL and AHL games that a traded player accumulates for their new team. NHL games played count as 1.0 ProGms while AHL games played count as 0.5 ProGms, and these are accumulated across both Regular Season and Playoff Games. So a traded player who plays 20 NHL and 10 AHL games for his new team will accumulate 25 ProGms for his team. So why just games played instead of points or other stats? Because not […]

Winnipeg Jets Height, Weight, and Age Rankings

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Hockey Stats
With the start of the NHL last night, there has been lots of team reviews including those tracking things like average Height, Weight, and Age of each team. You can find the league wide averages for the past few seasons here: https://jetsflightcontrol.docsurge.com/about-us/nhl-comparisons/ Here is the the averages for the Winnipeg Jets: Team Height HtRank Weight WtRank Age AgeRank Distance 2013-14 Winnipeg 74.0 2 207.2 5 26.5 28 Non-Qualify 2014-15 Winnipeg 73.9 2 206.70 4 26.7 27 Conf-Quart-Final 2015-16 Winnipeg 74.2 1 208.2 2 26.7 27 TBD Unfortunately, I don’t see these numbers for the Jets from the first two seasons. The Jets are a big, heavy team that is very young and appear to be on the upswing as they made the playoffs for the first time in 2014-15.

Winnipeg Jets Prospects Evaluation 2011 to 2015

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Jets Draft, Jets Improvement, Minor League Stats
In anticipation of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, I have prepared two posts that evaluate the cumulative draft and develop progress of the Winnipeg Jets. Drafting is the single best way for a sports franchise to build success so its not surprising that Winnipeg Jets Management has made draft and develop its central strategy. This post (and the one that preceded it) will break down how the Jets have done with their 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 draft picks up to the end of 2014-15 season (which is why this evaluation goes from 2011 to 2015). I have created a table that tracks each draft prospect taken by the Jets according to a very simple, transparent statistic called ProGames (ProGms). ProGames counts the number of NHL and AHL games that a drafted player accumulates for their new team. NHL games played count as 1.0 ProGms while AHL games played count as 0.5 ProGms, and these are accumulated across both Regular Season and Playoff Games.
