Jets Flight Control

Welcome to my blogged thoughts about the Winnipeg Jets. I love hockey and I love sports statistics. I am combining the two in my blog that looks at insightful new ways of seeing how the Executive Management of the Jets (Mark Chipman & Co.) are doing with advancing to the Stanley Cup.

I firmly believe that a sports franchise is only as good as its Ownership and Management. When Mark Chipman & David Thompson purchased the Atlanta Thrashers, they inherited some building blocks but the franchise was disorganized and listless. Evaluating the team on the ice leads to asking questions about how does ownership and management affect change in a team’s performance.

This blog will look at different aspects of the Winnipeg Jets from its drafting record, its player performances, and how the team compares to when it operated as the Atlanta Thrashers.

Winnipeg Jets Total Scoring & Goaltending Leaders from 2011 to 2013

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Jets Goalie Stats
After each season I will update the Winnipeg Jets total scoring for every player who has ever suited up for the team since it moved from Atlanta in 2011-12. This post covers the first two years of the Jets in Winnipeg. It also helps address the curiosity I have as to what ever happened to those players who used to play for the Jets but were let go or got traded as I list where they are currently. What you see below is the combined player scoring stats and goaltending stats  from 2011 to 2013 which is the Jets first two NHL seasons in Winnipeg. If you are interested, I have also collected the individual yearly scoring leaders for 2012-13, 2011-12, and the last season the team was in Atlanta in 2010-11. Player  Cur. Loc. St-John’s IceCaps 2012-13 Farm Team Scoring

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Jets Farm Team, Minor League Stats
The Winnipeg Jets established a new team with their existing AHL franchise in St-John’s, Newfoundland in 2011-12. The St-John’s IceCaps were a brand new team (even though the franchise moved from Winnipeg) since all of the players belonged to the Vancouver Canucks parent club. The team had a winning season, went far in the playoffs, and were loved by the Newfoundland and Labrador fans. With the St.John’s IceCaps being the primary farm team for the Winnipeg Jets, I thought it would be useful to review how the IceCaps did in their second season as a new team and track how many of those players contributed to the Winnipeg Jets in 2012-13.   # Name Pos GP Min GA SO GAA W L SOL SA SVS SAV% NHL GP NHL SA 1 Eddie Pasquale G 43 2452:57:00 114 4 2.79 15 23 4 1223 1109 0.907 * 2 Chris Carrozzi G 3 150:10:00 7 0 2.8 1 1 0 58 51 0.879 3 Mark Dekanich G 35 1913:47:00 95 2 2.98 16 14 1 909 814 0.895 * 4 Juho Olkinuora G 1 59:29:00 3 0 3.03 0 1 0 25 22 0.880 Empty Net 37:57:00 13 13 * indicates Rookie […]

Winnipeg Jets 2012-13 Player Leaders and GM Analysis

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Drafted Jets, GM Review, Jets Draft, Jets Goalie Stats, Jets Top Scorers
The new Winnipeg Jets 2.0 established themselves as a mediocre NHL team in 2011-12, finishing 4th in their division and missing the playoffs. Being built on the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team True North acquired a team that were just one or two steps above an expansion franchise. But despite this poor outcome Winnipeg and Manitoba adopted the team enthusiastically. Jets fans would have to wait a bit longer to watch their new team play in 2012-13 when NHL owners locked out the players for four months which resulted in the season starting in January and limiting the season to 48 games. What follows is an analysis of the 2012-13 team and how Jets Management has been successful in building the team, with a particular focus on GM Kevin Chevaldayoff and the transactions he implemented. Each player who played in 2012-13 is identified by how they were acquired by the Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets which can be via a Trade deal, a Draft pick, a Free Agent signing, or a Waiver pickup. Below this table I analyze the team’s composition and the turnover of players who stay with the organization for the 2013-14 season.   Player  Pos  GP  G  A  P +/-  […]

St-John’s IceCaps 2011-12 Farm Team Scoring

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Jets Farm Team, Minor League Stats
When True North brought the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg, they had a problem with finding a place where to place their other hockey team, the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League. Winnipeg would not be able to support both the Jets and the Moose. True North made the decision to place the franchise in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The team was renamed the IceCaps. But because the Manitoba Moose were affiliated with the Vancouver Canucks, none of the players would automatically follow the franchise to St. Johns. It was an example of a franchise but not the team moving cities. True North had to quickly start putting players in uniform, many from their Atlanta draft picks, but also a few free agent signings. It would be a new team in a new city for an old franchise. Because the St.John’s IceCaps are the primary farm team for the Winnipeg Jets, I thought it would be useful to review how the IceCaps did in their first season as a new team and track how many of those players contributed to the Winnipeg Jets in 2011-12.   # Name Pos GP Min GA SO GAA W L SOL SA SVS SAV% NHL […]

Winnipeg Jets 2011-12 Player Leaders and GM Analysis

by Chris Billows in Jets Flight Control 0 comments tags: Drafted Jets, GM Review, Jets Draft, Jets Goalie Stats, Jets Top Scorers
The new Winnipeg Jets 2.0 would be built on the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team that did not have much to be proud of.  True North acquired a team that were just one or two steps above an expansion franchise. Winnipeg and Manitoba adopted the team enthusiastically despite the team’s past performance. To begin analyzing how GM Kevin Chevaldayoff has attended to the team here is a list of the Winnipeg Jets skaters (ranked by point totals) and goalies (ranked by games played) for the 2011-12 season, their first in Winnipeg. Each player who played in 2011-12 is identified by how they were acquired by the Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets which can be via a Trade deal, a Draft pick, a Free Agent signing, or a Waiver pickup. Below this table I provide a summary of the makeup of the team and also track the team’s continuity to the 2012-13 season.
